Why This Guide
Most Phuket guides rank beaches. This one helps you pick an area based on why you’re going. Whether it’s fitness, diving, partying, or working remotely — each part of the island has a different vibe. Pick your purpose first, then pick your area.
The Areas
Soi Ta Iad, Chalong — Getting Fit
If fitness is your main goal, this is your street. Soi Ta Iad is Phuket’s fitness capital with a massive community built around training.
What you’ll find here:
- Muay Thai, Boxing & MMA gyms everywhere
- CrossFit at Unit 27
- Yoga studios
- Weight gyms and functional training studios
- Healthy restaurants with meal plans
- Body scan services and fresh fruit protein shake shops
The whole street runs on fitness. You’ll be surrounded by people who are there for the same reason.
Con: The nearest beach is about 20 minutes by scooter (Kata or Nai Harn Beach). If you need the ocean daily, this might not be your spot.
Chalong Pier — Diving
If you’re a diver, head to Sunrise Road at Chalong Pier. Dozens of dive shops line the street. Day trips for certified divers cost around 5,000 Baht. Easy to compare shops and book on the spot.
Nai Harn & Rawai — Workation & Expats
My favorite part of Phuket. Nai Harn and Rawai have amazing beaches, stunning sunset views, and plenty of good restaurants. It’s less touristy than other areas. The crowd here is mostly long-term expats and remote workers, not package tourists.
If I had to pick one area to stay in Phuket, it would be Nai Harn. Great beaches, great food, no chaos.
If you’re coming for a workation or want a more authentic long-term stay, start here.

Kata & Karon Beach — Family Holiday
Good beaches, lots of restaurants, and a calm atmosphere. If you want a classic beach vacation with the family, Kata and Karon deliver. Nothing wild, nothing complicated. Just a solid, relaxed holiday.

Old Phuket Town — Cafes & Culture
If you love cafes and restaurants, Old Phuket Town is your area. It feels more like a city than an island. Great for exploring on foot, with plenty of local food spots and coffee shops. Worth a day trip even if you stay somewhere else.
Central Phuket — Shopping
If you love malls and shopping, stay near Central Phuket. It’s close to Old Town and has everything you’d expect from a large shopping center. Practical, not scenic.
Bangtao — Luxury & International
Bangtao is the up-and-coming part of Phuket. You’ll find international schools, high-end restaurants, and a more polished vibe. It’s family-friendly and popular with expats who want comfort. Definitely more expensive than other parts of the island.
Patong, Bangla Road — Party
Phuket’s nightlife center. If you want to party, Bangla Road is where it happens. Loud, busy, and unapologetic. You either go for it or you skip it entirely.

Final Tips
Pick your purpose before you pick your hotel. Phuket is big enough that staying in the wrong area can waste your trip. Definitely rent a scooter, it’s the easiest way to get around. And don’t try to do everything. Pick one or two areas and enjoy them properly.
